According to historical records, the villagers’ ancestors called themselves the people of Xi Clan. They asked the natives to allow them to live in the village. Both the migrants and the natives were descendants of Jiuli Tribe which lived in Eastern Yellow River Basin about 5,000 years ago. Ciyou, the chieftain of Jiuli Tribe, was the direct ancestor of the migrants. Therefore, their request was granted by the natives. Xijiang, the name of the village, means “Xi Clan’s request”. Qianhu can be translated as “a thousand households”. There are 1,432 households in the village at present. The population of the village is over 5,500. The villagers live in their stilt wooden houses, which are called Diaojiaolou by locals. The stilt house shows the special architecture of the Miao people.
